Don’t Over Fertilize
It’s easier to think, the more fertilizer you use, the healthier your lawn can be. But this truly is a case of too much of a good thing can be a bad thing. In fact, too much of one of fertilizers main ingredients, nitrogen, can actually burn your grass. Fertilize just twice a year, in spring and fall. Plus, make sure you get the right formulation for your grass and soil type.
Rake Your Lawn
Raking isn’t fun, which is one of the reasons why you should probably hire a lawn care professional to do it for you. It is, however, very important. Once the snow is melted and the ground is dry, lightly running a rake over your lawn will dislodge the dead grass and make more room for new growth.
Mow at the Right Time of Day
Guess what? There is a right time of day to mow your lawn! Since we haven’t had much snow this year, you might be able to do this throughout the winter. In the morning, dew and condensation can weigh down your grass, making it much more difficult to cut. In the warmer months, noon would be the worst time to mow your lawn, because the heat combined with cutting can place stress upon your lawn. Try to mow in the late afternoon/early evening instead.
Just because it is winter doesn’t mean you should stop thinking about your lawn care. Making sure you have the right mix of fertilizer, not forgetting to rake, and mowing at the right time are all very important keys to keeping your lawn green.
